I highly believe that food influences a dog's health, both inside and out. I've seen what poor nutrition does for our furry friends and have made effort to proved the 'kids' with the best I can feed. I've switched them around to various foods to find what they do best on. I've tried a large variety including Blue Buffalo, various Wellness types, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Nutro varieties just to name a few
Currently Frank is eating Wellness Super5 Mix Senior. He gets 1/4 of a cup in the morning and 1/4 in the evening. I also float his food in the morning with some water to increase his water intake. He gets 1 teaspoon of Missing Link Plus to his evening meal as well to help with shedding and adds great join support. Oliver came to me free fed crappy dry food as well as yucky canned food. I quickly made the switch to Wellness Super 5 Mix original Chicken. He started on 1/3 of a cup twice daily and with more exercise he started loosing weight and looked less like a sausage and more like a young active dog. He went from 22 pounds to 19.3 over a 6 month period. He is MUCH more active and does wonderfully. I recently switched him to Merrick. The chicken was making him extremely gassy, and the Merrick takes away the chicken and adds fish as the main protein but not the calories. Other foods that have gone into Frank's tummy include: Wellness Core Reduced Fat Recipe, Wellness Super5Mix Whitefish and Sweet Potato Recipe, and a few other Wellness blends, and Blue Buffalo Longevity Mature. I like to feed a more holistic food choice with higher quality ingredients and grain free foods. Amongst those are Taste of the Wild, Innova, Pinnacle, Acana, Orijen, |
Lately I've been adding some Honest Kitchen with Frank's meals as well. I add a teaspoon to 1/4 cup of water. It might not be a "mash" when it absorbs the water, but I'm sure it makes it taste better and Frank really loves it:) There have been an increase in the amounts of dehydrated "raw" diets out on the market but I like that I can purchase THK in smaller boxes because I don't really use that much at a time. A bigger box/bag would last me forever otherwise.
The Honest Kitchen has a wide variety of flavors and also has a treat line. Frank highly approves of the treats:) His favorite store, The Doggie Deli, in Cedar Park, TX always offers him some when he comes in for a visit.

Chewies!!!
Recently I've been giving Frank raw bones. I've heard lots of things on raw bones and thought I would give them a try. They were a HUGE hit and not only that, I fill them with canned Wellness and freeze them again and use them over and over. Sort of like a kong, but they are easier to access the goodies. Frank definitely loves these over the kongs and he actually chews on the bones, which he isn't too fond of doing these days.
Frank really loves the CET veggiedents as well as the CET Hextra chews. Lately he has been chewing veggiedents more because of the shape and it's much easier for him to hold and chew. He's getting a bit pickier with age. I really like Virbac products and use a few of their dental items, including the Aquadent for the water bowl.
